The Coastal Cities and Regions of the Coalition

Around the world, cities that have joined the Coalition have voluntarily committed to working alongside national and local governments, as well as key stakeholders, to drive tangible change and build a sustainable and prosperous future for our coastal cities and regions.

Joining the Coalition:
Why? Who? How?

Who can join the Coalition ?

Membership is open to coastal local governments and is formally established through official endorsement of the Charter.

Why join the Coalition ?

By joining the Coalition, cities and regions gain direct access to capacity-building activities, partnerships, and funding opportunities essential for appropriate adaptation tailored to their territories.

What am I committing to?

Membership is voluntary, free of charge, and does not create any legal obligations or liabilities for participating entities.

However, by endorsing the Coalition, Members voluntarily commit to implementing actions aligned with the Coalition’s objectives:

  • Learning: Participate in trainings, workshops, and learning sessions
  • Sharing: Share critical data, strategies, and outcomes of local adaptation initiatives
  • Regulation: Develop and apply policies, guidelines, and regulations that promote sustainable coastal management
  • Implementation: Carry out concrete adaptation projects to protect communities
  • Awareness: Promote ocean education and coastal community engagement

How can I join the Coalition ?

Coastal cities and regions are invited to sign the Coalition Charter.

The representative of the city or region signs the Charter on its behalf, thereby committing to join the Ocean Rise & Coastal Resilience Coalition.

Upon signing the Charter, each Member must designate two focal points:
(1) A representative from the office of the head of the local executive or the external relations department
(2) A technical representative with appropriate expertise (e.g., in urban planning, land use, coastal and environmental management, nature-based solutions, or sustainable development)
